Interview of Robert Garcia

EXCERPT

FULL INTERVIEW

Author: Jim Hubbard

Date: January 18, 1989

People: Robert Garcia. (1962 – 1993)

Description: In late 1988, I received a grant from The Kitchen in the form of a Video-8 camera that was intended to do an oral history of ACT UP.  After I had done 7 interviews with 10 ½ hours of footage, the filmmaker in me freaked out and thought “how am I ever going to edit all this material?”  So, I made the huge mistake of not doing any more interviews, not understanding the importance of the unedited footage.  The ACT UP Oral History Project is, in a way, a corrective to that monumental misunderstanding.  This is the best of the 7 interviews.  Robert talks about his relationship to his Latin Heritage, the Gay Community and to ACT UP.

Filmed in the loft on Warren Street that Robert shared with other ACT UP members. This is the apartment referenced in the Flyer for Latina/o Caucus Meeting.
