Dia de la Hispanidad Action

Author: Cándido Negrón

Date: October 14, 1991

Demonstration: Dia de la Hispanidad '91 (Hispanic Day Parade)

People: Fernando Mariscal, Jairo Pedraza, Gonzalo Aburto, Carlos Maldonado

Description: ACT UP's permission to participate was revoked 16 hours before the event, yet activists broke into the parade to denounce the state of the HIV/AIDS pandemic throughout Latin America with the numbers of deaths written on each country's flag. It was a way to break the silence in the Latino community about HIV/AIDS. The silence was present both in the Latino communities in NYC and throughout Latin America. This was the biggest event and most diverse event in NYC's Latin American community, and the Latino Caucus was denied permission to march by the organizers once they understood that the Latina/o Caucus members were AIDS activists.
